ELNA GUY
I am a self-taught potter who has enjoyed working with clay for over 20 years, most recently from a workshop in the garden of our Cambridgeshire home. I build pots from slabs of groggy clay which have been textured through carving and marking, and altered by adding or removing clay to create positive and negative spaces. Inspiration for my work is taken from motifs found in architecture and the everyday patterns seen in urban settings. The colours I use are drawn from those found on local buildings: greys and yellows of stone, rusty reds and oranges, “clock-face” turquoise. Vessels are decorated with layers of underglazes, oxides and glazes but the exterior of the pots remains dry and rough, reminiscent of the stone and brick building materials.
